Friends of ours who work with orphans in another part of Russia have told us that in some orphanages the only time the children ever go outside is when there are volunteers present simply because there are too few workers to carry all of the children down the several flights of stairs between their rooms and the ground floor. The emptiness of life inside some Russian institutions is heartbreaking and, for many children, deadly.
